Adaptive Reuse, Under Construction
Located in Mexico City, this project transforms a historic two-story office and agricultural depot—originally belonging to a prominent figure in the region's mid-century trade, the “Onion King”—into a contemporary six-story multi-family residence. Tasked with adapting a deep, narrow, and linear footprint, our design introduces a central open-air courtyard flanked by two flanking light wells. This strategic carving of the existing volume floods both the northern and southern residences with ample daylight and natural ventilation.
The material palette draws direct inspiration from regional Mexican quarries. By juxtaposing raw, textured screen stone with carefully restored elements of the building’s past—including its original brickwork and exposed concrete—the design creates a dialogue between history and modernity. The central courtyard acts as a serene sanctuary, offering residents a tactile, nature-infused retreat that stands in peaceful harmony with the disciplined rhythm of modern urban life.
